Welcome To Our Website

Kilnhurst Model Flying Club is a small model radio controlled flying club consisting of 25 members.
We operate out of a fantastic site nestled above the village of Little Haywood at "Far Coley Farm". This is within easy reach from the towns of Rugeley, Cannock, Stone and Stafford, and we have a 5 Star Google Review.

My name is Paul, AKA Spooky. I joined the club at the beginning of 2012, and was taught to fly by one of the clubs instructors. Later that year I took and passed my BMFA 'A' Certificate.
Wanting to give back to the club for the help they gave me, I became one of the clubs instructors, and am now the Secretary and Webmaster.

The Club has Fixed Wing, Helicopter and Quad instructors, including FPV.
2023 saw us for the first time instruct 2 teenagers to solo fixed wing flight, and we are very proud of them.

If you have never flown before, and are looking to learn, then we are here to help.
For fixed wing, currently to start from scratch, the cheapest you will get in the air for is just over £360 for your equipment.
We recommend a high wing plane (as they are more stable), with a wingspan of at least 1.2 meters, running a 2.2 amp 3 cell lipo battery (you will need 3 batteries to start with), a lipo charger, charging bag (for safety, they can go boom), a transmitter with at least 6 channels, and a receiver for your plane. I would suggest a WOT4, RIOT,  FMS Super EZ or similar.
For this price you are looking at a very basic FlySky FS-i6X with receiver (£63), but I would recommend spending more money on your radio, as a good one will last you ages. Take a look at a Radiomaster Boxer 4in1 (£139), or TX16S MKII 4in1 (£199).
If you are a bit flush, perhaps a Spektrum NX6 (£294). I fly a TX16S MKI, and have done for the past 6 years, a lot at the club fly Spektrum, but buy once, and be happy. Your radio is your best friend.
You will then require our club membership, BMFA membership (for your insurance), and CAA Pilots ID. You are now close to £500 on the cheapest, or £800 with the dearest, but the good news is, we do not charge for tuition, we do that free of charge.

(All prices were correct as of May 2024)

On this website you will find information about our flying times, engine restrictions, and more as its expanded.

We meet the first Monday of every month at The Wolseley Arms. Meetings commencing 20.00 hrs, but amendments will appear on our news tab above.
The clubs AGM is in March, then official meetings are June, September and December, all the others are unofficial get together's, but we do like to come together at Christmas for a mince pie or 2 😋
This year (2024) saw us have our June & September official meetings at the flying field on a Sunday afternoon.
After the meeting we had a free BBQ, then got some more flying in. It was a great get together, and was very well attended.

Our Membership runs from 1st January to 31st December at a fee of £70 for adults and £35 for juniors.
Membership renewals are due by 30th November, or at the December meeting. Renewals paid before this date or at the meeting get a £5 discount.

BMFA Challenge 2023

On Sunday 15th May 2022 the BMFA for the first time got members across the UK to come together at 12 noon, to collectively attempt to set a new record for the greatest number of model aircraft of all types in the air at one time.
The attempt was one of a number of events celebrating the BMFA / SMAE Centenary.
Kilnhurst Model Flying Club were proud to be a part of this, with 11 members taking part, consisting of 2 fixed wing planes, 7 quads and 1 glider.

The BMFA were pleased to report after checking the submitted results from each of the clubs participating that they had a total of 3109 models in the air at 12 noon and that 263 BMFA affiliated clubs took part.

This therefore achieved a new BMFA National absolute record. They will be submitting a dossier to the FAI for the issue of the Diploma to acknowledge the achievement and, when successfully issued, apply for a World Record.

On Sunday 14th May 2023 at noon they did it again.

Kilnhurst Model Flying Club were once again proud to be a part of this, with 8 members taking part, consisting of 2 fixed wing planes, flown by our new solo teenage students Liam and Sebastian, 5 quads and 2 gliders.

The BMFA were pleased to report after checking the submitted results from each of the clubs participating that they had a total of 2224 models in the air at 12 noon and that 182 BMFA affiliated clubs took part.
